New Tapes: Italianz, Cervere + Pleasure Brothers.
AST049: ITALIANZ – “FUCK YEAH, TUTANKHAMEN” c54
Italianz is a duo comprising Ben Nibboy Taylor and Rob. Together they cover a variety of styles to great effect. The masters I was given for Fuck Yeah, Tootie were close to two hours long, I’ve whittled down the recordings to the absolute cream. Despite the cull, Italianz still cover a lot of ground here, equally nailing synth-pop bangers alongside minimal, stuttered electronics. All of this is done with the two’s contagious sense of humour.
AST051: CERVERE – “PHRENIC DERIVATIVES” c22
Cervere is Sean McMorrow (Noematic Oblivion, Radical Creation, 50% of Dry Mouth). After a self-released Cervere tape on his own label, Vir Rash and what turned out to be my fave tape of last year, “Excessive Liquidity” on Future Archaic, McMorrow brings two longform pieces to the table for Altered States. Cervere is minimal electronics at its finest, utilising an old-ass Roland drum machine and sampler loaded with plenty of wildcat samples to create a truly unique sound.
AST052: PLEASURE BROTHERS – “ECSTASY” c17
Since the dissolution of Teen Ax, Tony McKey has been working steadily as Pleasure Brothers with tapes being released on a variety of labels, including Mazurka Editions and Vir Rash. McKey is adept at creating tasteful discomfort through the use of reel-to-reel tape machines and effects. Ecstasy is two brooding tracks of dark electronics for the most misanthropic of noise lovers.
